Mexico City is the Capital of Mexico, and one of most populated and largest cities in the world. Mexico City is Mexico’s heart as well and a very important cultural and historical capital.

The city still has many pre-Hispanic constructions, proving the richness of the cultures that originally emerged in the Valley of Mexico, as well the architecture of Mexico’s enigmatic colonial period. A thriving amount of hotels, restaurants, art galleries, museums, and entertainment amenities are also to be found all over the city.

REASONS TO GO

Mexico City's Zócolo and the colonial buildings surrounding it

Urban Mexican Style - a blend of old and traditional and new cutting edge world

Colourful markets, trendy hotels and fantastic cuisine

ORIENTATION

The city is divided into 16 delegaciones (boroughs) which are then subdivided into colonias (neighbourhoods).

However, the real downtown areas are Centro, the old city centre, and Zona Rosa, the new business and entertainment district.

Centro Histórico, Zona Rosa, Polanco, Roma, Condesa and Lomas de Chapultepec are all quite close to each other and also to Paseo de la Reforma. These are the most important areas in the city that hold most of the tourist attractions.  In the southern part of the city, the suburbs of San Angel and Coyoacan along with the Floating gardens of Xochimilco are places also worth visiting.

Centro Historico, the historic city centre extends from the main square - Zócalo or Plaza de la Constitución. Several historic colonial landmarks, and the renowned Aztec Templo Mayor, are to be found here.

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit Mexico is perhaps from October to May, when the weather is more enjoyable. July is the rainiest month, and the smog is worst during winter, from December to February.

HOW TO GET THERE

Benito Juárez International Airport is located about 10 miles from the city centre. The best way to travel downtown is by taxi. Prices vary from approximately $19 to the Historic Centre, to $23 to the Zona Rosa, to $25 to La Condesa and Polanco.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Mexico City is a gigantic city and driving is absolutely not the best way to visit its scattered tourist attractions.

Mexico City has many public transport options. Metro is probably the best way, but then you also have the RTP bus system run by the city government, many private buses, known as microbuses and Electric Trolley buses.

You can also choose to travel around buy taxi. The safest thing to do is to call an authorized taxi stand (sitio autorizado).
