Cancun is a very well known Mexico resort, located in the state of Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula region.
Cancun has an amazing Caribbean Seas crystal water and white-sand beaches, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. The hotel strip spreads along 30 kilometres (nearly 19 miles) and has beautiful villas, five-star hotels and exclusive resorts and spas. There are also many shopping stores, restaurants and nightclubs.
Cancun is oriented for the mega tourism industry and here at bananatrips we usualy prefer Cozumel, less than one hour away by boat.
REASONS TO GO
Gorgeous beaches with crystal clear and warm water.
A day trip to Ro Secreto a stunning underground river dramatic stalactites and stalagmites.
A day trip to Chichn Itz Archaeological Site.
ORIENTATION
Cancun is very simple to navigate. Downtown is where most inhabitants live and it extends in on the mainland behind the lagoon. To the South is the airport, to the North is the city and in the stretch of land between the sea and the Nichupte lagoon are all the hotels, beaches and bars, known as the hotel zone or Zona Hotelera. This area is comprised of the (four-and five-star luxury hotels and hotels and shopping centers are distributed along the main Boulevard Kuculkn, which runs the length of the 22 km island. This district undoubtedly generates the greatest revenue and has the greatest economic impact on the nation, as compared to the rest of the state. This area is where the trendiest, most popular discos, the finest international restaurants and the largest entertainment venues are situated.
BEST TIME TO GO
In Cancun the weather is great all year round. November and early December are possibly the best time to go, as there are fewer tourists and prices are low. The busy season goes from late December to April, when prices are visibly higher. Christmas, New Year's and Easter holidays are specially overcrowded and the more expensive time to travel.
HOW TO GET THERE
The Cancun International Airport is about seven miles from the city's hotel district. You can take a taxi to the hotel area from around $40 or a "collective" taxi (called collectivos, for shared rides) for under $10.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Within the hotel Area, the best way to get around is by foot. From here is also very easy to travel by bus to the downtown.
There are bus companies connecting all attractions and towns along the coast: the Riviera Express for the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Xel-Ha) and ADO for the major national destinations.
