Kiev is the capital of Ukraine with a population of around 3 million inhabitants. The city is located on the north central Ukraine, on the Dniepr River and has precious architectural monuments. It is the cultural, industrial and scientific centre of the country, with striking landscapes, and beautiful gardens.
REASONS TO GO
St Sophia's Cathedral.
The Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
Mother Motherland statue.
BEST TIME TO GO
The climate in Ukraine is essentially characterized by abundant rain, cold and clouds in fall and winter. Summers are short but warm. From late spring to early autumn are the most beautiful seasons to visit this city.
ORIENTATION
Kiev is spread over the banks of the River Dniepr, which runs south all the way through the city in the direction of the Black Sea, dividing naturally the city in two.
Most of the Kiev's tourist attractions and business companies are located at the right bank, being the eastern Left Bank mostly residential.
HOW TO GET THERE
By plane
The Boryspil International Airport is about 40 minutes from the city centre.
The easiest way to get to the city is to take a marshrutka. They leave to the plaza behind the central train station, from where you can get the underground to many places in city.
There is a regular bus service between the airport, the city centre and the Central Railway station. Buses leave frequently and take around 1 hour.
By train
Kiev's central railway station, Kyiv-Passazhyrskyi (Київ-Пасажирський), is located close to city centre. The metro station "Vokzalna" (метро "Вокзальна") connects to the railway station.
It has connections to all main cities and towns in Ukraine and also international trains to Austria, Belarus, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Public transportation system in Kiev includes the metro (underground), buses, trolleybuses and trams. The Kiev Metro system is the fastest transport and covers most of the city. The metro stations are by itself a tourist attraction, like in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
One exclusive form of public transportation in Kiev is the funicular that climbs up the precipitous right bank of the Dniepr River.
The private owned minibuses called marshrutkas are also a transport option.
Many Ukrainian drivers are pleased to take you a ride for some extra money, so taxis are cheap and very easy to find. When you go on the street just make a sign and some driver will stop. Be aware of the fact that some less serious people can charge you overpriced rates. Try to agree on the fare before entering in the car. You can also call an official taxi to take you to your destiny.
