Tuscany or Toscana, located in the central Italy is one of the most stunning and admired destinations in this country. Along the Mediterranean coast, Tuscany is a smoothly hilly region, known for its vineyards and olive groves, with large houses and small villages spread around the small hills, complemented by towns overflowing with Renaissance art and architecture. The most important river is the Arno, on which Florence and Pisa are situated.
REASONS TO GO
The outstanding landscape and beaches
The famous wine and the traditional Tuscan gastronomy
The rich Architecture, from medieval to renaissance and baroque styles
The highways – the regional roads offer a beautiful landscape
ORIENTATION
Tuscany is spread over the heart of central Italy. The capital city is Florence, which is around 300 km from Rome.
Positioned between the northern side of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the central Apennines, the region is delimited and crossed by big mountain chains and has a few but very fertile plains.
Tuscany has two very different sides - the art cities such as Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca versus the idyllic agricultural countryside with small towns, villages, castles, villas and vineyards. The splendid Chianti and Montepulciano wines are some of the world known wines produced in this region.
Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit the region. In summer the most important cities and attractions are overcrowded with tourists.
By Train
Trenitalia has many connections between the cities of Tuscany and the major cities in the rest of Italy. The fast Eurostar links Rome to Florence in about 1 and half hours. There are regular trains between Florence, Lucca and Pisa.
From Pisa, the train travels by the seaside until Rome, via Grosseto, and until Genoa via Viareggio and Cinque Terre.
By bus
There are buses running between Siena and Florence, Montepulciano and Montalcino, operated by TRAIN. Other companies operate in many other towns of the region, like SITA and Lazzi.
By car
The best way to visit the region is by car. There are rent-a-car agencies at the airports and at the principal train stations.
