Umbria is a small region in centre of Italy, with a total population of less than a million. The beauty of its mountainous and agricultural landscape, crossed by the Apennines, together with the many fascinating small towns makes it worth visiting. Umbria’s capital is Perugia, and towns like Assisi, Gubbio, Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto and Terni are also important in the region.

REASONS TO GO

Walled medieval towns like Assisi, Gubbio, and Montefalco.

Fabulous summer art and music events—including the legendary Spoleto Festival.

A haven countryside that produces many of Italy's best wines, olive oil with very good restaurants that know how use them.

AVOID

Going during winter, when temperatures drop below 4ºC and many restaurants and hotels are closed.

ORIENTATION

Known as the Italy's green heart (il cuore verde dell'Italia), Umbria has some of the country's most immaculate rural landscapes.

The province is located between Tuscany and Le Marche. The regional capital - Perugia, with its sophisticated ambience and world-class summer jazz festival is a cultural city with beautiful renaissance monuments.

The region has much to see, like the beautiful Lake Trasimeno (in the west), the medieval walled city of Gubbio, St. Francis's town – Assisi and the charming towns of Spello, Orvieto and Montefalco.

The main towns in the region are easily by train or bus to other central Italian cities.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Perugia airport has many car rental offices, taxis and a bus to Perugia's center.

Two Trenitalia rail lines serve the region. The Rome-Florence line runs through Orvieto and Chiusi and the Rome-Ancona line goes through Spoleto and Foligno, where a western branch links to Assisi and Perugia.

Ferrovia Centrale Umbra, connects Perugia to Umbertide and Città di Castello to the north, and Deruta and Todi to the south. The main regional bus company is APM, based in Perugia.
