Olbia is a port town in the north-eastern Sardinia (Italy), in the Gallura sub-region with approximately 54.000 inhabitants.
Olbia is the best entrance in the island if you pretend to explore the well-known resorts of the Costa Smeralda, Porto Rotondo or the island of La Maddalena.
REASONS TO GO
The Emerald Coast and its amazing water.
The exclusivity of Porto Cervo.
The archaeological heritage of the island.
BEST TIME TO GO
From May to October is the best time to visit the Costa Smeralda, however in July and August it is usually very crowded and the prices are overrated.
ORIENTATION
Olbia is located on the Costa Smeralda, one of the most beautiful extensions of coast on the Mediterranean. This Cost has both wild and rocky coast and beautiful sandy beaches. Olbias’ harbour is the main access point to Sardinia and the area around it has many lively bars and restaurants.
The rest of the island has many historical sites, as a heritage of the many cultures that have passed through here. The Nuraghic civilisation was exclusive to Sardinia, and the strange structures they built are spread all over the island.
Porto Cervo, Porto Pozzo and Santa Teresa Gallura are the most known resorts of this Coast.
HOW TO GET THERE
The Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, 2 km from the centre, has many connections with European cities. Mostly low cost companies serve this airport. Two buses (nr. 2 and 10) travel frequently into Olbia town centre.
Taxi from the airport to the centre costs around € 15 and takes 10 minutes.
It is also possible to enter the island by boat. There are many connections to various Italian cities, such as Naples, Civitavecchia, Livornio, Piombino and Genoa.
TRAVELLING AROUND
There are buses and trains connecting the principal towns, however, a rent-a-car is possible the easiest way to discover the entire island. The main bus company is Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST;800 86 50 42; www.arst.sardegna.it in Italian), which operates extensive services throughout the island. FdS (070 34 23 41; www.ferroviesardegna.it) operates a faster service linking Cagliari, Oristano, Sassari, Nuoro Oristano and Porto Torres.
