Calabria is a region located in the Southern Italy and known for its immaculate beaches, astonishing landscapes, and rustic charms. Hillside villages, ancient Greek temples and Byzantine churches are to be found all over the region. Calabria is subdivided into five provinces: Catanzaro (regional capital), Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia.

Main tourist attractions are the coastline and the mountains. The coastline goes from rugged cliffs to sandy beaches, with a clear sea und unspoiled spots to visit.

REASONS TO GO

Dino Island and Praja a Mare with crystal waters and beautiful beaches

Aspromonte and La Sila, with its national park and lakes

The Strait of Messina

ORIENTATION

Calabria is located south of Italy, delimited on the north by the Monte Pollino massif and surrounded on the other sides by Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. The region is a stretched and narrow peninsula, separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina.

Even though the gorgeous green transparent sea is always present, Calabria is mostly a hilly region. The mountain ranges of La Sila, Pollino and Aspromonte are well known for their distinctive flora and fauna.

Lamezia is located 35 km from Catanzaro and 70 km from Cosenza.

BEST TIME TO GO

The region's climate is mild during winter, with hot dry summers. If you want to enjoy the nature at its best, a good time to go would be between April and June.

HOW TO GET THERE

By Plane

Calabria is served by airports in Reggio Calabria (Tito Minniti), Lamezia Terme (Sant'Eufemia) and Crotone (Sant'Anna).

Lamezia international airport is 13 km from the urban centre and 1 km from the Lamezia railway station. Many low cost companies fly to this airport. It can be reached by public transport (departure from Piazza Porcelli terminal and from the central railway station) and by taxi (from Piazza Mazzini and the central railway station).

By Bus

Three bus companies assure the connections between the principal points of the region: SIMET (http://www.simetspa.it), A.M.A.C.O. SpA (www.amaco.it) and Perrone Bus (http://www.perrone.it).

By Train

The Naples-Reggio Calabria crosses the entire region from north to south along the Thyrrenian coast.

During summer, fast trains connect Milan, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Florence, and Rome with the main seaside resorts of Calabrian Thyrrenian coast.

By Boat

Several daily USTICA lines jetfoil connections are available to the Aeolian Islands, departing from Reggio Calabria. The Caronte ferryboats connect Sicily with Reggio Calabria.

ROADS

The main north-south highway through Calabria is the A3 Autostrada, from Salerno to Reggio Calabria.

Lamezia Terme is a strategic road intersection (highway A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria, exit Lamezia Terme direction; main road 280) along with the train station and the airport. The railway station travels to the Thyrrenian side and the Ionian area through the line to Catanzaro Lido.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The best way to discover and visit this beautiful region is by car. There are several rent-a-car agencies at the airports.
