The Italian Lake District extends across Northern Italy. The southern ends of most of the lakes are rather flat (a prolongation of the River Po Plain), but the northern ends are mountainous as the lakes get deep into the Alps.

The Italian Lakes combine pleasant weather with gorgeous landscape. There are beautiful gardens with rare and exotic plants. These lakes are the perfect location for some days of pure relaxing delight, water and mountain sports, in complete interaction with nature.

REASONS TO GO

Beautiful and peaceful small lakeside towns, surrounded by high mountains covered with snow

The charismatic hotels, restaurants, street cafes and wine will make you feel like home

These Lakes have been popular as a resort since the days of the Roman Empire

ORIENTATION

Lake Como (Lago di Como) is located in Como (Province) in Lombardy, Northern Italy. It is 45 km North of Milan and very close to the Swiss border (20 minutes from Lugano). Lake Como is probably the most beautiful of the Italian lakes. With its elegance, cruises between resorts, and splendid gardens open to the public. Lake Como is long (50km), slim and exceptionally deep. The southern end divides into two extensive 'legs', with the scenic town of Bellagio located on the cape between them.

Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore), divides the regions of Piemonte and Lombardy. The lake's northern end, in the Alps, extends into Switzerland, where Locarno is a popular lakeside destination. The charming resorts such as Stresa, and the renowned gardens of the Borromean Islands, Isola Bella and Isola Madre, make the destination a eternally worthwhile one.

BEST TIME TO GO

The season in the Italian Lakes starts before Easter and goes until the end of October; most hotels and some restaurants are closed for the rest of the year.

HOW TO GET THERE

By plane

Milan is the most convenient city to fly into for the Italian Lakes. There are two main airports in Milan: Linate, which is 12km east of Milan, and Malpensa, 48km northwest of the capital. For rail connections from Milan visit www.fs-on-line.com

You can also rent a car in these airports and travel to the lakes:

From Malpensa take the A336 to the A8, take the Milan direction then head off on the A9 to Como and Switzerland.

From Linate, take the A1 toward Monza, then the A4, West, then join the A9 North toward Switzerland and Como.

By car

From the North, go through Switzerland, on the A2 to Locarno, then take the A13 towards the West side of Lake Maggiore or stay on A2 to Lugano and Como.

From the South:

For Lake Maggiore and Lake Varese, from Milan, take the A8 Autostrada dei Laghi. Stay on A8 for Varese; go on A26 direction Gravellona for Lake Maggiore.

For Lake Como and Lake Lugano, from Milan, take the A8 Autostrada dei Laghi, then the A9 towards Como, or go on the SS36 near Monza for Lecco.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The best way to get around each of the lakes and its towns is by boat or hydrofoil. Varenna, Bellagio, Cadenabio, and Menaggio are the only towns car ferries travel to.
