ORIENTATION

Florence is located in the middle of Italy's Tuscany Region, in western Italy along the Arno River and between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas. It is 172 miles north of Rome and 185 miles south of Milan. Florence is the capital of the region of Tuscany, and has close to 370.000 inhabitants, with around 200.000 more in suburban areas.

The city centre of Florence is small and compact, making it easy to explore and visit and has some important neighbourhoods you can’t miss:

Central Florence, from the Duomo to the Arno River

Here you'll find all the essential attractions of Florence such as the Cathedral and baptistery, Piazza Signori, the Uffizzi Museum and Ponte Vecchio (the most beautiful of the bridges that cross the river Arno.

The District of San Marco

It is one of Florence’s liveliest quarters. Around the Piazza Santissima Annunziata, which is one of Florence’s most beautiful squares is the centre of activity. Close to it is the Galleria dell'Accademia which is home to Michelangelo's David, and other works by the great artist.

The District of Santa Croce

Directly east of central Florence, includes the Bargello and the major avenues running from the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio. Around Piazza Santa Croce, there are many craft boutiques, bohemian restaurants and cafés.

The District of Oltrarno

This area of the city still has a local character. Its most important monument is the Palazzo Pitti, with its many museums as well as the beautiful Boboli Gardens. West of Ponte Vecchio you'll find the area of Santo Spirito which is home to antiques restorers and other artisan workshops.

Santa Maria Novella

Around Piazza Santa Maria Novella you will find true architectural treasures, together with some of Florence’s most elegant squares. It's also the location to Florence’s more exclusive shopping street Via Tornabuoni. HOW TO GET THERE

By plane

Amerigo Vespucci Airport is situated on the north-west periphery of Florence, just 4 kilometres from the city centre. It is a 20 minute journey into the centre by taxi or by SITA/ATAF bus shuttle, linking the airport to the central railway station.

Vespucci Airport is connected to some of Europe's major airports and also many Italian cities.

Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport is about 80 kilometres from Florence. Many low cost companies fly to this airport, which is connected to Florence by rail and road. Pisa Airport and Firenze SMN railway station are connected by five trains a day, and there is also a TerraVision bus service. The journey takes around 80 minutes.

By train

The city's main railway station is Firenze S.M.N. (Santa Maria Novella). Located in the city centre, it is close to the major tourist attractions. The station area is also the principal hub for buses serving the city and surrounding areas. The second most important station is Firenze Campo di Marte.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The historic city centre is relatively small and it is easy to move around on foot. Electric buses also offer services linking various important points.
