Cagliari is the capital of the italian region and island of Sardinia. The old part of the city (called Castello, the castle) is located on top of a hill, with a wonderful view over the Gulf of Cagliari. The city has an attractive medieval town centre with typical restaurants, magnificent churches, museums, and many archeological sites. Cagliari has also a famous beach called Poetto beach.

REASONS TO GO

The historic district "Castello".

Very good wines and food.

Relaxing and swimming at the large and wonderful Poetto Beach.

ORIENTATION

Sardinia is an Italian island in the Mediterranean, shaped by a series of mountain ranges, hills and highlands. The coasts are mostly sharp and rocky, but also have wonderful beaches and bays. Many small and beautiful islands are to be found in front of the coasts.

Cagliari is bordered on the North by the provinces of Oristano and Nuoro, on the south by the Mediterranean Sea, on the east by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and on the west by Medio Campidano and Carbonia-Iglesias Provinces.

BEST TIME TO GO

From May to October is the best time to visit Cagliari, however in July and August it is usually very crowded and the prices are overrated.

HOW TO GET THERE

Cagliari Elmas Airport is served by many low cost airlines, having regular flights to many Italian and European cities.

There is a very frequent bus shuffle to the city centre.

Cagliari is also easily reached by ferry from several ports like Genoa, Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The best way to discover the city centre is by foot as everything is in a short distance.

The bus services are very well-organized in Cagliari, with over 30 bus routes around the city.

The main train station is located on the west side of the Piazza Matteotti and has connections to Porto Torres, Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Sassari and Oristano. There is also another train station on Piazza Republica. The main bus company is Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST;800 86 50 42; www.arst.sardegna.it in Italian), which operates extensive services throughout the island. FdS (070 34 23 41; www.ferroviesardegna.it) operates a faster service linking Cagliari, Oristano, Sassari, Nuoro Oristano and Porto Torres.
