Apulia (in Italian: Puglia) is a region in south-eastern Italy. It is bordered by the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south, the Adriatic Sea in the east, and the Ionian Sea to the southeast. In the south, Peninsula Salento forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy.

The region is bordered by other Italian regions of Basilicata, Molise and Campania. It neighbours Greece across the Ionian Sea and Albania across the Adriatic Sea.

REASONS TO GO

Romanesque cathedrals, the Swabian and Aragonese castles and the Leccese Baroque

The National Park: Peninsula Gargano

The conical houses called trulli around Alberobello and the Old town in Bari

ORIENTATION

The territory of Apulia is a long, thin peninsula, mainly formed by plains and hills, except from some lower mountains of the Southern Apennine range and the Gargano promontory.

Puglia offers over 800 km of coastline, delimited by vast plains of wheat fields, gardens, olive trees and vineyards.

Bari, the capital city of Puglia, has an extraordinary heritage of art, enclosed within the maze of the streets of the old city. The most important of Bari's monuments is the basilica of Saint Nicolas, an amazing example of Romanesque architecture. Along the Bari coast lie gems such as Trani, Barletta and Molfetta.

The coast of Brindisi area is characterized by small towns with pretty historical centres, close to the immaculate beaches and the blue waters.

BEST TIME TO GO

Puglia has one of the largest summer seasons in Italy. Usually, from April to November, the weather is fine to go to the beach and open air cafés and restaurants.

HOW TO GET THERE

Bari Palese international airport has flights from international destinations and also from Italian destinations including Milan and Rome.

From Brindisi airport (Aeroporto del Salento) there are flights from Switzerland and the UK as well as from other Italian destinations.

Ryanair flies to Bari and Brindisi from Stansted in London.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Getting around Puglia by public transport is quite easy. FS trains connect almost all the most important places, while small, private lines link to the most remote areas - in the Gargano and on the edges of Le Murge.

Renting a car can be a good solution, mostly if you want to discover and travel through the region.
