Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland. Its joie de vivre, nightlife and tourist attractions are remarkable, and it is the most popular access point for international visitors to Ireland. The city centre is relatively small and can be navigated by foot, with most of the population living in suburbs. Dublin is nowadays a historical and contemporary cultural centre for the island of Ireland as well as a modern centre of education, the arts, administrative function, economy and industry. Visiting in May, June or September is a good idea. The weather is likely to be at least as good and hotels are less busy. In June you can visit the city and participate in the great Bloomsday Festival (June 16th is Bloomsday, the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses takes place).
ORIENTATION
Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin Region. On the north side of the Liffey is O'Connell Street - the main street, which is intersected by numerous shopping streets, including Henry Street and Talbot Street. On the south side are St. Stephen's Green, Grafton Street, Trinity College, Christ Church and St. Patrick's Cathedrals, and many other attractions.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Plane
Dublin International Airport is about 12km north from city centre, and is well served by buses and taxis.
A taxi to the city centre should cost approximately €25.
There are several Dublin bus services operating to the city centre, taking about 45 minutes.
There is also an Airport Express coach service – Airlink. Airlink number 747 will bring you to the central bus station, Busaras, from which coaches depart to all parts of the country.

By Boat
There are many regular ferry services operating between Ireland and the UK through two ferry ports, Dublin Port and Dun Laoghaire.
Dublin Port is only a few minutes from Dublin City Centre.
Dún Laoghaire Harbour is located 7 miles south of Dublin city and 16 miles from Dublin Airport. Dún Laoghaire is serviced by the DART (Suburban Rail) which can take you to and from the City Centre in less than half an hour. Dun Laoghaire is also serviced regularly by Dublin Bus.
TRAVELLING AROUND
By Bus
Travelling by Bus is an easy way of getting around in Dublin. Dublin has an excellent network of bus services across the city and region. There is an excellent network of services from Dublin Airport, Dublin Port and Dun Laoghaire as well as a Nitelink and Sightseeing Tours, providing a fundamental service for commuters and visitors alike.
By Train
Dublin’s two main train stations Connolly Station and Heuston Station are very important hubs for the city, connecting many towns and cities in the country.
The Dublin Luas tram system is a state-of-the-art Light Rail Transit (LRT) System. Luas connects you to Dublin city centre with a high capacity, high frequency and high speed service. There are convenient stop locations and excellent levels of comfort and safety with easy access at all stops.
