Iceland is a mountainous island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean, south of the Arctic Circle. Unlike the nearby Greenland, Iceland is a part of Europe, not of North America, though geologically the island is part of both continental plates.
Because of cultural, economic and linguistic similarities, Iceland is considered a Nordic country. The closest parts of land are Greenland (287 km) and the Faroe Islands (420 km). The closest distance to the mainland of Europe is 970 km (to Norway).
Iceland is an island of 103.000 km2 (39.756 sq miles) and its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjikur, rises to 2.119 m.
Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 11% of Iceland is covered by glaciers but at the same time the country has an unexpectedly mild climate and numerous geothermal hot-spots. Reykjavik is the only city and also the capital of Iceland.
