Rhodes is one of the largest and most fertile of the Greek Islands, and also one of the most visited because of its combination of beaches, archaeological sites, and big medieval town. The island is part of the Dodecanese islands.

While the northern coast is famous for its energetic tourist resorts, the south offers peaceful beaches and a slower and simpler pace of life.

REASONS TO GO

The old town of Rhodes city and the Palace of the Prince Grand Master

Lindos - The stunningly and trendy beautiful town beach on the bay

The sea is perfect for the practice of water sports: Swimming, Snorkelling, Diving, Surfing and Kite surfing (on the west coast and especially on the south end of the island)

ORIENTATION

The island of Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead, 79.7 km (49.5 mi) long and 38 km (24 mi) wide, with a coastline of approximately 220 km (137 mi). The city of Rhodes is located at the northern lean of the island, as well as the location of the ancient and modern commercial harbours. The road system radiates from the city along the east and west coasts.

The interior of the island is mountainous, sparsely populated and covered with forests of pine and cypress. Mount Attavyros, at 1,216 metres (3,990 ft), is the island's highest point of altitude.

Outside of the city of Rhodes, the island is sprinkled with small villages and beach resorts, such as Faliraki, Lindos, Kremasti, Haraki, Pefkos, Archangelos, Afantou, Koskinou, Embona (Attavyros), Paradisi, and Trianta (Ialysos).

BEST TIME TO GO

The climate is particularly good with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The months of July and August get too crowded, but for example in May or September, is really a good time to visit and enjoy the island.

HOW TO GET THERE

By plane

The island is served by Diagoras International Airport, situated 14 km southwest from Rhodes Town. There are regular flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Crete; charter airlines connect Rhodes with many major cities all over Europe. Taxi to the city centre costs around Euro 20 and takes 20 minutes.

By boat

Rhodes is accessible via ferry (www.ferries.gr/booking from Symi, Tilos, and Bodrum, as well as Datca and Marmaris in Turkey. Cruise ships dock at the Commercial Port, east of Rhodes (city)'s Old Town.

TRAVELLING AROUND

There's a good public bus system connecting the principal points of the island. Inside the town there are bus routes that cover all the areas of the City of Rhodes operated by RODA which serves the West coast and part of the East coast up to Faliraki. The other operator is KTEL. It serves the East coast of the island up to Kattavia village. The buses of both operators leave from the New Market area at Mandraki.

Renting a car is also a good option to better explore the island. Some very interesting places are not reachable by public transport.
