REASONS TO GO

The overwhelming monuments

The gourmet cuisine, the croissants, the baguettes

The perfect city for romance

ORIENTATION

The Seine River divides Paris in two: La Rive Gauche and la Rive Droite. The city is relatively flat but has quite a few prominent hills, like the famous Montmartre.

The city has twenty arrondissements (municipal boroughs), but most visitants spend their time visiting the first eight ones, where the most important attractions are situated.

BEST TIME TO GO

Paris has a maritime climate with chilly winters and warm summers. In fact, this city is perfect to visit anytime of the year, but autumn is especially enjoyable. With the so called La Rentrée, the city returns to the normal rhythm after summer holidays and everything is at its best, including the cultural scene.

HOW TO GET THERE

Paris has two principal airports, Roissy Charles de Gaulle (CDG), 25 Km from the city centre, and Orly, 15 Km from the city centre.

A third airport, Paris Beauvais, is mostly used for low cost companies. A shuttle service (€13) is organized to and from its terminals and Paris-Porte Maillot.

From CDG terminals, the Roissy bus departs every 15 minutes and arrives at the city centre (at Opera) in 45-60 minutes (€8.90 one way). The less expensive (€8.40 one way) and fastest (30 minutes) is the underground RER B to Gare du Nord. Taxis to the city centre cost around are €50.

From Orly, the metro Orlyval takes you to RER B Antony station and a joint ticket price (Metro+RER+Orlyval) is about €9. The other choice (and cheaper) are the airport shuttle buses going to RER C Pont de Rungis station with a combined ticket price (Metro+RER+shuttle) of around €5.60. The Orly bus takes you directly to RER B Denfert-Rochereau. Taxi rates are of approximately €35.

TRAVELLING AROUND

The city’s local transport system (www..ratp.fr) is not expensive and is very efficient. Tickets are valid on both buses and trains. You can also buy a travel card: 1 day travel card zone 1-3 costs around €9.

You can also see Paris from the Seine by using the river as a creative means of transport (www.batobus.com) or you can also rent a scooter (www.freescoot.com) or a bicycle.

But of course, the best way to explore this wonderful city is walking!
