Amman is the capital of Jordan, with close to 2.5 million inhabitants and located in the north eastern part of the country.

It is an attractive city, full of contrasts, combining old and new, perfectly positioned on a mountainous area, connecting the desert to the fertile Jordan Valley.

In the commercial centre of the city you will find contemporary buildings, hotels, fancy restaurants, art galleries and boutiques, and at the same time, small coffee shops and artisans' workshops.

The downtown area is much older and more traditional, with ancient monuments, small charming shops selling typical products and wonderful jewellery.

REASONS TO GO

The panoramic view from the biblical Mount Nebo.

The Roman Amphitheatre in downtown Amman.

Floating in the Dead Sea.

BEST TIME TO GO

During summer months, temperatures are extremely hot, especially in the desert and the Jordan Valley area, and in winter there are generally heavy rains. Spring and autumn are very pleasant with warm sun and temperate temperatures which makes them great for visiting.

ORIENTATION

One of the best places to explore is the older downtown area, around the King Hussein Mosque and the old souk (traditional market). To better observe the atmosphere of the Old City, you should wander around the district east of Jabal Amman, where you can find amazing souks, good museums, ancient buildings, monuments, and cultural sites.

The western area of the city is more recent and quite modern, with many shopping centres, expensive hotels, nightclubs, trendy restaurants and bars.

HOW TO GET THERE

Queen Alia International Airport is located about 30 minutes from Amman´s downtown, and is served by many international airline carriers.

You can get to the city centre by taxi or you can take one of the shuttle buses that connect the airport to the city centre terminal, leaving every 30 minutes between 06.00 and 23.00 and every hour between 23.00 - 06.00.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Buses

You can take a JETT buses (blue), which are very comfortable and punctual and making stops in the most important attractions.

There are also many white and green minibuses, generally used by the locals, which are a more economic option, but also less comfortable and less punctual.

Taxis

A good way to move around the city is by taxi. Always try to negotiate the fee and spot before getting in. A normal taxi fare should range from 2 JD to 10 JD around Amman. Short trips from 5 to 20 minutes shouldn't cost more than 5 JD.
