Cairo is the capital of Egypt with around 16 million inhabitants. It is located on the River Nile and very famous for its history and heritage, preserved in the magnificent medieval Islamic city and Coptic sites in Old Cairo. The city is situated in the middle of three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. The Egyptian Museum, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar, and of course, a visit to the Giza Pyramids, are just some of the amazing must do´s in Cairo.

REASONS TO GO

Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx - The only remaining monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Egyptian Museum - The world's premier collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts.

Over 600 Islamic monuments.

TO AVOID

The Memphis Open Air Museum, it has more about souvenirs than artefacts

ORIENTATION

Though strongly connected to the past, Cairo is also home to a vibrant modern civilization, with skyscrapers and modern restaurants side by side to world heritage monuments. In the beginning, Cairo was the designated name of the city on the eastern bank of the Nile, and this is where you'll find both the modern Downtown and the historical Islamic and Coptic sights.

Outside the centre, on the eastern bank, you'll find the modern, more prosperous suburbs of Heliopolis and Nasr City, and Ma'adi to the south. On the western bank are located the great Giza pyramids and, further to the south, Memphis and Saqqara.

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit Cairo is in autumn or spring, when the weather isn't so hot. Summer is unpleasantly hot and in winter, especially December and January it´s quite cold.

HOW TO GET THERE

Cairo International Airport is well served with most important cities in the world. A free shuttle bus runs between its three terminals every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day.

If you are going to the city centre, you can take a taxi (you may be able to share a taxi with other tourists or backpackers).

TRAVELLING AROUND

By metro

Cairo has a metro system fully functioning with two lines quite limited in its reach. However, they are still a major advantage in the areas they cover, and also a really cheap option. Note that the centre two cars are women-only.

By taxi

The fleet of black-and-white taxis that work Cairo's streets are handy but communication with the driver can be hard and the meters are not generally used. As a tourist it´s better to agree a price before you star the trip.

The bright yellow taxis referred to as 'City Cabs' or Cairo Cabs' can be a bit more expensive (and less of an adventure) than the black-and-white cabs for short journeys. However, for longer distances they are the best option for price and comfort.
