Salvador is the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia. BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit Salvador is during summer, between December and March. At this time the city is bustling with cultural, religious and popular events.
ORIENTATION
Salvador is located on a peninsula off the Atlantic Ocean. A high cliff runs along the whole bay, separating the city into Cidade Alta, up on the cliff, and the Cidade Baixa down by the bay. Cidade Alta has a beautiful old city centre with many historical sites, museums, colonial architecture, restaurants, bars and handicraft shops. Cidade Baixa is mostly a busy commercial centre.
HOW TO GET THERE
Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhães International Airport is located about 30km from Salvador. To get to the city centre you have buses, minibuses and many taxis available.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The best way to get around the city centre is on foot. To get between the upper and lower parts of the city you can take the Lacerda elevator or the cable car.
There are also many taxis and bus lines travelling around the city and connecting the most important areas.
STAY SAFE
One of the regrettable sides of travel in Brazil is the common violent street crime. Take extra precautions and use common sense to keep yourself safe.
