Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of West Bengal and the second largest city in India. It’s a both shocking and charming city, with an impressive poverty combined with disintegrating British Raj-era gems, extensive gardens and historical colleges.

Most interesting landmarks in Kolkata are rather central and easy to get around on foot (if the weather is good) or by taxi. This city has a great historical heritage including museums, temples, churches and grand remnants of the Raj.
The BBD Bagh area is to be found on the north side of the city centre, boasting some amazing buildings from British India. To the southwest on the vast green Maidan is the Eden Gardens cricket ground and the famous Fort William. A bit further south is the famous landmark of Victoria Memorial.
By Plane
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (Dum Dum airport) is about 18km (11 miles) northeast of the city. This airport serves a great deal of international and domestic flights.
Kolkata airport is very small and handles around 5 million passengers annually. It's an international airport but over 75% of its passengers are domestic travelers.
Taxi is the best way of transportation from the airport, with tickets available from the pre-paid taxi booth in the arrivals hall. You can also take a taxi to the Dum Dum metro (train) station, located around 5km (3 miles) from the airport.
By Train
Kolkata is well connected by rail to almost all the big stations in India.
Taxis, buses, train and rickshaws are the most practical means of transportation around the city. It is also a good idea to rent a car with driver.
